The Great Baby Item Debate: New or Secondhand?

The Great Baby Item Debate: New or Secondhand?

Welcome back to HomeCentsibility! Today we're going to talk about something that I think is on everyone's mind: what to buy new versus secondhand.

It's no secret that one of the best ways to save money is by purchasing items secondhand. But sometimes, it's hard to know what is worth buying new, and what you can safely buy used.

When my husband and I first started our journey towards financial independence, we quickly realized that one of our biggest expenses was buying things new. We were constantly buying new clothes, new furniture, new toys for our little one, and so on. It wasn't until we started exploring the world of secondhand shopping that we realized just how much money we could save.

Now, let's talk about what you should consider buying new. First and foremost, safety items should always be bought new. Car seats, cribs, and other items that are critical for your child's safety should always be purchased new so you can ensure they meet current safety standards. Additionally, items that have a warranty, such as electronics or appliances, are often worth buying new. This way, if something goes wrong, you have the peace of mind of knowing that you're covered.

Another item I recommend buying new is mattresses. Mattresses can collect dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens over time, which can be harmful to your baby’s health. While it may be tempting to save money by purchasing a used mattress, it's not worth the potential health risks.

But for everything else, consider purchasing secondhand. Clothes, shoes, and accessories can be found in great condition at consignment shops or online marketplaces like Poshmark or ThredUp. Toys can be found at thrift stores or garage sales. And furniture can often be found on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. I have had a ton of luck in Mom give/get facebook groups. When a mom in the area is ready to purge her old baby items, there are other moms that are happy to take them off her hands (sometimes that mom is me!).

Of course, when purchasing secondhand, it's important to use caution and do your research. Check for any wear and tear on the item, and make sure it's still in good working condition. When buying furniture, check for any signs of bed bugs or other pests. And always be sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize any secondhand items before using them. And make sure to ask about allergens., like if the item came from a smoking or pet-friendly household. That may be fine for some people, and not fine for others, but always worth knowing ahead of time!

In conclusion, buying secondhand is a great way to save money and reduce your environmental impact. But when it comes to safety items and items with a warranty, it's often worth buying new. So next time you're in the market for something, consider checking out your local thrift stores or online marketplaces before buying new. Your wallet (and the environment) will thank you!
